Separating clicks, landing-page views and useful visits
See what each paid social traffic measure establishes and where to investigate a gap between ad interaction, page load and useful action.
A click records interaction with an ad. A landing-page view records a successful load under the platform's rules. A useful visit meets a business-defined rule for the page's purpose. Read each separately; none is a sale.
Understanding Paid Social Traffic Metrics: Clicks, Landing-Page Views and Useful Visits
- Clicks (destination)Measures clicks leading to a specified destination on TikTok. Not all clicks result in a website visit.
- Landing-Page ViewsCounts successful page loads on the destination site or TikTok Instant Page. Requires a complete load under TikTok’s rules.
- Useful VisitsDefined by business-specific actions (e.g., viewing eligibility info, product details). Must be reliably tracked via analytics or pixel events.
Start with the right click column
TikTok's Clicks (all) includes social interactions. Clicks (destination) counts clicks leading to a specified destination. For a website journey, destination clicks are the more relevant starting point. Check where that destination leads: a destination click is not necessarily a website visit.
Keep the campaign, destination and dates beside the column name. Otherwise a change in the mix of ads or destinations can look like a change in visit quality.
Check the load measure
TikTok counts a landing-page view when someone clicks an ad and a third-party website page or TikTok Instant Page successfully loads. TikTok calculates this measure itself; it is distinct from page events an advertiser sends through Pixel or Events API. A click followed by an abandoned or failed load may appear without a landing-page view.
A gap between destination clicks and landing-page views is a prompt to inspect the URL, redirects and page loading on the devices and locations served. It does not identify the cause by itself. Compare the relevant columns for the same campaign and period before changing the ad.
Key Performance Indicators for Paid Social Campaigns
- Destination Clicks
- The starting point for evaluating ad performance.
- Landing-Page Views
- Indicates successful page load after a click.
- Useful Actions
- Business-defined engagement (e.g., form view, detail scroll).
Pros and Cons of Using TikTok's Landing-Page View Metric
- ProsProvides platform-level insight into page load success; helps identify technical issues like broken links or slow loading.
- ConsDoes not confirm user engagement or understanding of content; may not align with Google Analytics sessions due to differing definitions.
Define useful for this offer
Choose an observable action that helps with the business decision. A service page might count a visit to eligibility information or a suitable enquiry. A product page might count a relevant detail view. Check that the action is recorded reliably; a page load alone does not show that the visitor understood the offer.
Google Analytics engagement measures are analytics definitions, not proof that a visitor qualified or bought. Show them separately from the useful action you chose.
| Measure | What it establishes | What to ask next |
|---|---|---|
| Destination clicks | Clicks towards the selected destination under TikTok’s rule | Was it the intended page, and did it load? |
| TikTok landing-page views | The website page or Instant Page loaded under TikTok’s rule | Could visitors use the page? |
| Site sessions or engaged sessions | Activity measured under site analytics rules | Did visitors take the chosen useful action? |
| Useful actions | The chosen step was recorded | Did it lead to suitable enquiries or confirmed orders? |
Do not subtract counts from different systems as if they were one exact funnel. TikTok says its landing-page views and Google Analytics sessions can differ because their definitions and recording logic differ. If Google Analytics uses campaign URL tags, use consistent source, medium and campaign names so traffic is grouped as intended.
Investigate the first meaningful break: access to the destination when loaded-page views lag clicks; the ad promise and page when loads produce few useful actions; and qualification or handoff when actions produce few suitable outcomes.
For an Australian organisation using a third-party website pixel, have the privacy owner review what it collects and shares. A missing event does not justify sending information the organisation should not share.
Investigating Gaps Between Ad Interaction and Useful Outcomes
- Check destination click vs. landing-page viewIdentify if the URL is correct, redirects are working, and pages load across devices and locations.
- Assess page load vs. useful actionVerify that visitors can access and interact with key content (e.g., eligibility forms, product details).
- Evaluate useful action vs. business outcomeConfirm whether recorded actions lead to qualified leads or confirmed orders.
- Review privacy complianceEnsure tracking pixels comply with Australian privacy laws (OAIC guidance) and only collect necessary data.
