Naming ad sets so budget decisions remain understandable

Build concise ad set names that identify each group's job without implying a budget control the platform does not provide.

Name an ad set for the decision it represents. Its role, offer or service, relevant audience or region, budget level and version should help a reviewer find the group and understand why its spend might be kept, changed or paused. The name describes the setup; it does not prove the budget setting or the result.

Put useful fields first

Choose a few fields the team uses in spend reviews. One workable pattern is role | offer or service | region or audience | budget level | version. Keep the order consistent and define the terms in a short register. If the campaign name already identifies the objective and offer, repeating both in every ad set name may add clutter.

For example, Enquiries | Repairs | Region A | Campaign budget | v1 and Enquiries | Repairs | Region A | Ad set budget | v1 distinguish budget arrangements. These labels do not state the approved amount, exact targeting or result. Avoid claims such as Best audience or Cheap leads, which can become misleading. Keep customer details and sensitive list names out of labels.

Use the platform's own terms: Meta Ads Manager calls its settings Advantage campaign budget and Ad set budget; TikTok calls the lower level an ad group and uses campaign budget optimisation. TikTok ad group names support 512 characters, and a campaign can include up to 999 ad groups.

Make names agree with budget controls

A name helps locate spend; the account settings determine how spend is controlled. In Meta Ads Manager, check whether Advantage campaign budget or Ad set budget holds the budget figure. If it is managed at campaign level, an ad set name should not imply its own approved spending limit.

On TikTok, set a campaign budget in campaign settings or a group budget in the ad group's Budget and Schedule step. Campaign budget optimisation can distribute spend unevenly among ad groups. Record the actual budget level and approved limit outside the name, whichever platform is used.

For Meta, a daily budget is an average, not a daily cap: spend may be up to 75 per cent above the daily figure on a day, but no more than seven times that figure across a calendar week. Do not treat the name as a spending cap.

Key Platform Limits and Guidelines (Australia)

  • TikTok ad group character limit512 characters
  • Max ad groups per campaign (TikTok)999
  • Meta’s CBO (Campaign Budget Optimisation)Budget distributed dynamically across ad sets; individual ad set budgets are not enforced.

Keep a short register behind the labels

For each active group, record its purpose, relevant targeting rules, location, placement, budget-control level, start date and owner. Add the creative or destination version when it helps explain a decision. When a material setting changes, record the before and after values and the reason. A version marker is useful only if someone can find the change behind it.

A budget-control comparison for the register: CBO | campaign budget $400 | 4 ad groups | group budgets N/A; non-CBO | campaign budget $400 | $100 per ad group. These are example configurations, not an account's approved limits.

Use v1 for the initial version and increase the number after a material change, such as v2. Record the date, old and new settings, reason and approver alongside the version so the name can be traced to the change.

During a budget review, read the name alongside actual settings and spend. If a group's purpose changes completely, check the platform's edit and duplication controls and give the new work a name that reflects its job. TikTok allows an ad group to be copied or deleted; for a CBO campaign, an individual ad group can be copied to an existing campaign, not directly to a new one.
