Account Structure

Paid social account and campaign structure

Organise paid social campaigns, ad sets and account access around clear jobs, real budget controls and decisions the team can review.

Organise paid social work so every campaign has a clear job, every lower-level unit has a reason to exist, and the business keeps control of its accounts. Create a separate group when its objective, delivery settings, spend approval or review decision differs. Available controls depend on the platform and campaign setup.

Map the controls before building

TikTok Ads Manager uses campaigns, ad groups and ads. The campaign has an advertising objective; ad groups hold settings such as audience, placement, budget and schedule.

Check LinkedIn Campaign Manager’s current builder to confirm its hierarchy and settings before planning. If adapting a structure from another platform, verify each level and control rather than copying it directly.

Planning layerQuestion to answer before launch
Business and accessWho controls the ad account, billing, connected assets and approvals?
CampaignWhat work belongs together, and which settings or spend limits are shared?
Ad set or ad groupWhich audience or delivery choice needs its own control or review?
AdWhat will people see, and where will they take them?

The business and access row is a planning task, not a platform hierarchy level.

Before a TikTok campaign is delivered, verify its settings. The platform allows an ad to be turned off before publishing so the campaign can be taken past draft mode for review without delivering. Use that state to check the intended campaign and grouping before switching delivery on.

Planning layers before launch

  1. Business and access (planning task)Who controls the ad account, billing, connected assets and approvals?
  2. CampaignWhat work belongs together, and which settings or spend limits are shared?
  3. Ad set or ad groupWhich audience or delivery choice needs its own control or review?
  4. AdWhat will people see, and where will they take them?

Set boundaries around useful decisions

A different business action or materially different offer can justify a separate campaign. Within a campaign, create a separate ad set, or ad group on TikTok, when a region, audience, placement or approved test needs its own settings or review. Minor audience variations do not each need a new campaign merely because the builder permits one.

Budget controls matter when making that choice. TikTok campaign budget optimisation can allocate spend unevenly across ad groups. If a region needs its own spend boundary, confirm that the proposed setup provides one before launch.

Keep names and ownership clear

Use names that reveal the job and the distinguishing choice, such as an offer and region. Keep detailed targeting rules, exclusions, approvals and changes in a separate register. A name helps someone find a group; it does not prove what its settings or results are.

List the ad account and only the connected profiles, tracking assets, catalogues or other assets the work requires. Decide who may edit ads, view results and manage billing. Keep a business-side administrator able to review permissions and arrange their removal at handover.

Use drafts to check the TikTok build

In TikTok Ads Manager, a campaign can be started from the Dashboard or Campaign list, or copied from an existing campaign. After choosing an objective, the campaign is saved automatically as a draft. Drafts appear in the Campaign list and can be reopened for editing, so the initial build does not have to become a live campaign.

TikTok offers Manual, Search and Smart+ campaign setup. Manual uses the standard workflow for control of ad settings; Search serves ads in TikTok search results; Smart+ is a single campaign option that uses AI to automate performance objectives.

Campaign setup also includes naming and budget, with optional controls for split tests and campaign budget optimisation. A campaign budget sets an amount the business is willing to spend, and TikTok says the campaign stops when it reaches that budget. Confirm that this campaign-level limit matches the spend authority approved for the work.

An ad group can be created during a new campaign flow or added to an existing campaign. In the existing-campaign flow, select the campaign before naming the ad group and configuring its settings. This is a useful check against creating a duplicate campaign when the work belongs in an established structure.

Check platform limits when naming and grouping

TikTok campaign names and ad group names each support up to 512 characters, and a campaign can contain up to 999 ad groups. These are platform limits, not recommended naming targets. Keep names readable for the people who will find and review the structure.

TikTok also allows an ad group to be copied or deleted from its menu, and ads can be created from an ad group. Treat copying as a structure change: check the destination campaign and settings before relying on the copied group, rather than assuming the new item has the intended role.

Review the structure before adding more groups

Can the team explain each campaign’s job and spend boundary? Does each lower-level unit support a distinct delivery or review decision? Can the people doing the work access the assets they need?

After launch, compare platform results with business records and the change log before changing the hierarchy. A tidy account structure alone cannot show whether an enquiry became a customer.

Record who approved the structure and who is authorised to switch delivery on. If review is incomplete, keep the ad turned off.

Structure review before adding groups

  • Can the team explain each campaign's job and spend boundary?
  • Does each lower-level unit support a distinct delivery or review decision?
  • Can the people doing the work access the assets they need?
  • After launch, compare platform results with business records and the change log before changing the hierarchy.
  • Record who approved the structure and who is authorised to switch delivery on.
  • If review is incomplete, keep the ad turned off.
