Choosing a paid social objective before selecting placements

Choose a paid social objective from the action you need, check the optimisation goal, then assess eligible placements and the customer journey.

Start with the business action, then choose the paid social objective that supports it. Verify the optimisation goal beneath that objective, then check which placements are eligible and usable before choosing a format. A preferred feed or format is a poor starting point if the campaign cannot pursue the intended action there.

How to Align Paid Social Campaigns with Business Actions in Australia

  1. Name the business actionDefine a clear goal such as 'completed enquiries for our Sydney service area' or 'confirmed superannuation sign-ups'. Ensure it aligns with internal records.
  2. Select the matching paid social objectiveChoose Meta: Leads, LinkedIn: Lead generation, or TikTok: Lead Generation based on the intended action.
  3. Inspect the optimisation goalConfirm that the goal—such as Landing Page View on TikTok or Website Conversions on LinkedIn—is measurable and aligned with the business outcome.
  4. Check eligible placementsVerify available placements in the campaign builder—e.g., For You Feed, Search Results Page on TikTok—for relevance and device usability.
  5. Preview and validate the customer journeyTest how the ad appears on mobile devices and ensure key details like GST, ABN, or location are clearly communicated.

Name the action

Write down the action and eligible audience. “Completed enquiries for our Sydney service area” is clearer than “more engagement”. Define a valid enquiry or confirmed sale in the business's own records as well as in the ad account.

Meta Ads Manager lists six campaign objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. Its older functions are grouped under these labels: brand awareness, reach, video views and store traffic under Awareness; video views and messages under Engagement; messages and lead generation under Leads; app installs under App promotion; conversions under Engagement, Leads and Sales; and catalogue sales under Sales.

Meta's six objective labels are being rolled out gradually, so the menu may differ by account. TikTok objective names listed are Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community Interaction, Lead Generation, Website Conversions, Product Sales and App Promotion; availability may vary by account eligibility and region.

LinkedIn groups its objectives as Awareness (Brand awareness), Consideration (Website visits, engagement and video views) and Conversion (Lead generation, website conversions and job applicants). Select the objective whose stated action matches the business action, rather than treating the category label as the goal.

Platforms do not all offer the same objectives or combinations. Exposure alone does not establish orders, and a visit alone does not establish an enquiry. If the business needs a conversion, check that the relevant action can be recorded reliably in the ad account. For TikTok, pixel tracking can be set up at the ad level if desired.

Inspect the optimisation goal

TikTok places Landing Page View under the Traffic objective. At campaign level, select Traffic; at ad-group level, choose Website, select Placement, then set Landing Page View as the optimisation goal.

Clicks is the default optimisation goal unless changed manually. A loaded landing page may be a more useful immediate measure than a click when the page itself is the next step, but neither measure proves a sale.

TikTok's Landing Page View setup lets you check that metric in a custom report: choose Custom Columns, then Page Event, then Landing Page View. The metric is available for all ad groups, including those not optimising towards it.

LinkedIn says objective selection shapes the formats, features and bid types available later. Its documented goal examples are impressions, clicks and video views, which shape the rest of the campaign setup. In Campaign Manager, select Create, then Campaign, to start choosing an objective.

An objective label alone does not show which choice will work best for a particular advertiser. Match the optimisation goal to the business action and check that action against business records.

Key Metrics by Platform for Australian Ad Campaigns

TikTok - Landing Page View
Available under Traffic objective; trackable via custom reports in Ads Manager
LinkedIn - Website Conversions
Requires pixel tracking; used for sales and lead actions
Meta - Website Conversions
Enabled through pixel setup; essential for measuring sales against ATO-reported revenue

Check placements after the objective

Inspect which placements are eligible for the chosen setup, then preview the message and destination on a phone. Check that the creative can communicate material terms and that the next action is usable on the device.

In TikTok Ads Manager, placement is selected at the ad-group level. Choose Automatic Placement or TikTok or TikTok Ad Network; some accounts show “eligible placement”, which can be edited with the pencil icon.

When TikTok placement is selected, ads may appear in the For You Feed and, when “For You” is selected, Profile Feed, Following Feed, Friends Feed, TikTok Lite, TikTok for Web, Mini Drama Feed, Search Feed and Search Results Page. Search Results Page is listed only for Sales, Sales > Website conversions, Lead generation, Traffic and App promotion.

The placement page names TikTok Lite as Japan and Korea only, Lemon8 as available in the United States, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, and PineDrama as available in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. TikTok for Web and TikTok Lite are also described as available only in certain markets.

The listed market details do not establish availability for an Australian account. Choose from the options actually shown in the campaign builder, and do not assume a named placement is available locally.

Record the action, objective, optimisation goal and selected placements together. When reviewing results, compare the platform's goal with the business action. A campaign optimised for visits needs separate sales evidence before it can be credited with sales.
